THE ALL-PURPOSE JOKE
Does this image, or those for Hood's Sarsaparilla and for Pond's Extract, have any connection to the product it advertises?
This card is probably what is called a "stock card". The top part, the cartoon, was printed in large quantities with the bottom left blank. Vendors of any product could then order the card with their own message or name added at the bottom. Notice that in this case, the pharmacist's own information is on the back of the card. Using a stock card was cheaper than designing and printing a unique advertisement.
