Challenges to Creating Replacements That Work
Reducing Wear

Understanding Motion

Gait analysis is one technique used to study motion.

A subject is "wired up" with electronic sensors that record muscle actions as the person moves. Analysis of the data generated from these studies has helped us better understand the biomechanical forces at play when a person moves, and the differences in motion among various individuals. This understanding can then help us create better designs for replacements, ones that last longer and exert less strain on the recipient's body.

Gait analysis can also be used to study such topics as the way a replacement has altered an individual's way of walking or the performance of different replacement designs.
